Adventure Close to Home

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

My sister-in-law and her husband went on an adventure close to home. To celebrate her husband’s birthday, she took him to the world’s largest artificial whitewater river and an official U.S. Olympic Training Site., the US National Whitewater Center in Charlotte, NC. They live in Mount Holly, NC off of Interstate 85 near the beautiful campus of Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, NC.

The US National Whitewater Center is located on the banks of the Catawba River in Charlotte, NC. They did a climbing center and a ropes course. They were so brave. They had a blast and couldn’t believe it was right here in Charlotte, NC.

Whether you are an Olympic-caliber athlete, weekend warrior or a casual observer you can share this world-class sports and training center experience. Whether you want to play hard or relax on the river’s edge, the USNWC offers a great place to take it outside. You can go whitewater rafting and kayaking, mountain biking and hiking trails.

The USNWC is located on 820 Hawfield Road, in Charlotte, NC. Take I-85 to exit 26 Sam Wilson Rd. to Moores Chapel Rd to Hawfield Rd (Charlotte).

It has been very dry this summer in Western NC

It looks like every small town around has finally decided to restrict the use of water. Charlotte and Mecklenburg was one of the last areas to start mandatory water restrictions. All the towns in Cabarrus county have been on water saving mode for a while. Harrisburg, Concord, Kannapolis North Carolina all are reducing their water use. Even Belmont and Gastonia have some restrictions. Now I keep getting it messed up, can I water my Grass in Mint Hill, NC on Wed or Sat, or is it Matthews, NC that waters grass on Wed and Sat. Just a few brave folks in Matthews are watering their grass anytime. Charlotte Mecklenburg utility department has told us that if we get caught on the wrong day or even washing our car it will be $100 added to our water bills, and that is the first time. Pretty harsh!! But water usage has dropped below the target by a few million gallons each day. I think we are down to about 115 million gallons each day and the target is 125 million so we are doing great. The Catawba river and Lake Norman and Lake Wylie are as low as I ever remember. It looks very bad with all those boats sitting on the dirt below their piers. Even the floating piers on Lake Norman in Mooresville and Davidson can not drop low enought this year. I hate to hope for a hurricane, and definitely would not want anything like happened in New Orleans last year, But a little Tropical Depression that could move thru the gulf and into Charlotte, NC would be a good thing for us this fall. The one off the coast might cause some problems east of Raleigh, NC but nothing even as close as Mt Pleasant, NC or Midland and Oakboro, NC there is not even a shower is expected.
See ya soon

Home sales down, not in Charlotte

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

The media is trying to scare a slump in the housing market accross the country, and in some places they have succeeded, but not in Charlotte NC real estate market. Things in Charlotte are still going great, so far this year 2007 closing have gone up each month. Starting in January with 2615, February 2878, March 3573, April 3534, May 3779, June 3852 and July ‘07 3875. This does not look like a slump to me, maybe many of the news writers learned a different math, or the new math. These numbers came from the Charlotte Observer on Tuesday August 28, 2007. Now our median price has dropped .06% from last summer to $230,200 but last summer was an all time high and things were hopping here. We are seeing a little slow down here from last year because many of our out of town buyers can’t sell their home. But they will and there is a lot of pent up demand here, so buy now before all you neighbors sell their home and move in.
