What do you think about cyclists on our streets?
Thursday, September 13th, 2007I see lots of people around town on their bicycles, it always seems very dangerous to me. VERY! They are so hard to pass, I just don’t feel comfortable passing them without moving over to the other lane, and lots of times this can cause backups for a long way. Many of our street are not designed for someone going so slow to be passed. Back several years ago when I was working at Crown Subaru our service manager Benji Capps decided to cut back on expenses and ride his bike the 5 miles to work. It was great for his health or he did loose a lot of weight and I’m sure he was in great shape. I don’t think it took him more then about 20 minutes to make the Trip down Lawyers road to Idlewild and to Independence. But one day he was very late, someone had backed out of their driveway in front of him, he had quite a spill. He was ok and kept riding but this is the problem all cyclist have, we are just not accustomed to looking for people on bicycles and it is very easy to run into them by mistake. This is what happened to Benji and I am sure has happened to many avid cyclists. To ride a bike in Charlotte the cyclists is taking his life in his own hands, all the time. We motorist’s are not mean, we are just unaware. It could be we are talking on our cell phone, text messaging, or even getting ready for work in the predawn hours as the cyclist pulls behind or beside us. Hopefully we were able to pick up a glimpse of him out of the corner of our eye before we hit him, but maybe not. So if you want to ride in Charlotte, PLEASE, I’m asking you watch out for us. OK???
Thanks Gary
